▶ Title: Nuclide Transport and Radiological Surveillance in a Subsurface Environment at Nuclear Facilities

▶ Abstract:

To understand the behavior of radioactive materials in nuclear facilities, monitoring and prediction over the nuclear cycle period from construction via decommissioning to the disposal stage of radioactive waste should be required. In particular, an on-line integrated radiological surveillance system for groundwater has been proposed in order to prevent the spread of contaminants and to monitor the unplanned release of radioactive materials according to the operation of nuclear power plants. The surveillance system, which is undergoing international standard deliberation, presents functional and performance requirements within each component. In addition, for the comprehensive performance evaluation of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal facilities, input data on the geochemical reaction characteristics of nuclide within multiple barriers are establishing, and field demonstration technology is being developed based on KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT). These accumulated data and technology will be used to evaluate the acceleration/retardation of nuclide transport within multiple barriers and to be used in an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) before the construction of the HLW repository in the future. The research activities for the behavior of nuclide and radioactivity in a subsurface environment at nuclear facilities are expected to contribute to securing public trust through the provision of safety core technologies and data necessary for the operation of nuclear power plants and conducting radioactive waste disposal projects.
