Title: The Role of Big Data and AI in Environmental Issues

▶ Abstract:

Big Data provides a unique opportunity to explore the dynamic patterns of social response not only during the disaster emergency but before and after the emergency as well. Public perceived risk can be assessed by real-time monitoring of public’s online information search activities related to the emerging disaster. However, the social monitoring data have been underutilized for crisis and disaster mitigation policies due to lack of pioneering and interdisciplinary research efforts.

In this seminar, I will introduce the utility of Google Trends data, as a type of the preprocessed Big Data, in investigating the potential triggers and dynamic patterns of social response during the emergency of earthquake/drought at different spatial scales. First, I will introduce how we can utilize the Google Trends data to investigate the potential triggers of Californian’s awareness during the 2011–17 Drought and how we can quantify the forgetting rates of the public awareness from a stochastic social memory model. A power law model is selected and trained against the monthly Google Trends data. Second, I will share the findings from a spatiotemporal analysis of earthquakes in Italy.

In closing, I will discuss the role of Big Data and AI from the perspective of smart city and environment and their utility to crisis/disaster risk management in South Korea.
