▶ Title: Nuclear Decommissioning - Radioanalytical Issues and Solutions

▶ Abstract:

With 25 reactors producing a third of electricity, Korea has long been a leader in nuclear energy. But with its first commercial reactor – Kori-1 – shut down in 2017, Korea is preparing to enter a new era of nuclear decommissioning. The reactor, which began temporary operations in 1977 and started commercial operations in 1978, has been shut down due to safety issues due to frequent breakdowns.

Environmental radioactivity analysis capabilities in Korea are quite well establised since its long history of monitoring programmes organised and supported by central government and local authorities. KHNP also provides funding for environmental monitoring programmes specially for those regions where NPPs are located.

However, radioactivity analysis for nuclear decommissiong market is completely new area in Korea with no experiences for commercial scale reactors. In this lecture, some of radioanalytical issues that the industry is encountering and the solutions for those issues will be discussed.
