Title: Introduction to Hyper Tube eXpress (HTX) as the next generation transportation

 Abstract:

There has been a steady increase in the demand for new, faster, and more energy-efficient modes of transportation given the advances in technology. The evacuated tube transport (ETT) has gained popularity as the next-generation transportation mode after automobiles, high-speed trains, and aircraft. For example, The Hyperloop, proposed by Elon Musk in the Hyperloop Alpha document in 2013, is one of the most popular ETT. The Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) has been researched on ETT since 2009, and the Hyper Tube eXpress (HTX) is the name of K-ETT (Korean-ETT). The HTX is an innovative transportation method that uses maglev to overcome the problems of high-speed wheel-rail trains, such as adhesion and mechanical friction, while minimizing aerodynamic drag by using an evacuated tube. The HTX targets speeds (1,200 km/h, Mach 1) faster than cars, high-speed rails, and even airplanes by using a near-vacuum (0.001 atm) tube and maglev trains.

The HTX has a number of challenging issues, including magnetic levitation, aerodynamics, and vehicle dynamics, etc. This seminar will provide a brief technical overview of Hyper Tube eXpress.
