▣ Abstract :
This seminar introduces advanced computational methods for nuclear safety analysis, with a particular focus on particle-based simulation techniques and their applications. As nuclear energy systems face increasingly complex safety challenges—ranging from severe accidents and multiphase thermal-hydraulic phenomena to debris transport and fuel-coolant interactions—reliable numerical tools are essential for understanding physical processes that are difficult to observe or reproduce experimentally.
The seminar will provide an overview of particle-based approaches, including their fundamental concepts, major strengths, and current limitations in comparison with conventional grid-based methods. Particular attention will be given to their ability to handle large deformations, moving interfaces, fragmentation, and complex fluid–structure interactions. Representative applications in nuclear safety research will be discussed, including molten material behavior, multiphase flows, particle transport, and accident-related thermal-fluid phenomena.
Through these examples, the seminar aims to help graduate students understand how advanced computational methods can complement experiments and conventional simulations, and to identify promising research opportunities for improving the safety and resilience of current and future nuclear energy systems.
