"POSTECH Opens Door to Mass-Production of Gold Substitute"

A technology that can create graphene sponge in only 10 minutes was developed for the first time in the world. The graphene sponge is a material expected to replace expensive gold or platinum used for solar cell electrodes and fuel cells.

Professor MH Kim of WCU Advanced Nuclear Engineering Department at POSTECH, HS Ahn, a researcher at Incheon University, Professor JS Lee, Department of Chemical Engineering at POSTECH and their team of researchers announced that they have successfully synthesized 3 dimensional graphene in the form of sponge using a process called ‘nucleate boiling.’

Their research was published in the online edition of the Scientific Reports, a sister magazine of the world-class scientific journal, the Nature. The magazine appraised this achievement to be a groundbreaking event in mass-production of aforementioned electrodes.

The existing method of synthesizing graphene took almost 20 painstaking hours, hindering the mass-production thereof. Professor Kim’s new technology can synthesize graphene sponge at a relatively low temperature of 200 Celsius degrees in just 10 minutes.

Professor Kim said his new process had “not only simplified the complex synthesis process, but also shortened the synthesis time.” He added that the door to mass-production of affordable graphene electrodes will be wide open by this new technology.
